Artist - Melody Locke

My art reflects my appreciation for the peace and beauty of the natural world, a feeling that I hope is felt by those who view my work. When I was young, I saw a plaque that read, “Flowers are like smiles from God.” This verse stayed with me, inspiring a lifelong love of flowers that my family nurtured. Growing up, I witnessed how my master gardener parents transformed seeds and bulbs into vibrant gardens and orchards. Our summers at the Jersey Shore and camping in the Appalachian Hills deepened my connection to the natural world, a driving force in my art, and continue to inspire my landscape photography. Lumen printing, a cameraless photographic process, captures the essence of the plants and flowers, creating ethereal images that sometimes vaguely resemble the source plant. The resulting images are both visually stunning and deeply personal.

A naturalized Texan, Melody Locke creates fine art prints using traditional and alternative photographic processes. Her portfolio includes B&W photographs printed in a traditional wet darkroom. She also employs non-camera photographic processes like lumen printing to create vibrant and ethereal images from botanical material.

Melody's studio, located at Silver Street Studios at Sawyer Yards, is open every second and third Saturday of the month. On most weekdays, you can find her in her studio during the early afternoon, and she is more than happy to schedule appointments to accommodate busy schedules.

Melody graduated from the University of Houston and began her long-term association with the Glassell School of Art in 2007. She is an active member of local arts organizations and has served on the board of WiVLA since 2018. Melody and her husband live in Houston and are dutiful servants to Maggie, their cat.
