"Artists Enhancing Spaces"
Artist - Kathie Nelson
As an intuitive abstract artist, my paintings are about things that cannot be expressed in words. With little preconceived idea of the finished product, I use color, texture, contrast, various tools and marks, and collage to create multiple layers and history, which guides my way to a finished painting. This approach leads to surprising and unique discoveries. My paintings invite the viewer to uncover the meaning exclusive to themselves.
I grew up in suburban Chicago, the second of five children, and have been the artistic one in the family. My creativity emerged early; I learned to sew and made my clothes throughout high school. I took art classes during high school and college but did not pursue a degree in art. I initially dreamed of becoming a fashion designer and studying advanced draping and design, but I eventually shifted focus. I earned a degree in Nutrition and Medical Dietetics and worked as a registered dietitian/nutritionist for over 20 years after moving to Houston in 1998 via Hong Kong and The Netherlands. In 2019, I retired, aiming to learn Spanish, travel, and paint. However, the pandemic altered my travel plans. Since my husband worked out of town, I had a perfect time to start painting. This journey has brought new friendships and fulfillment—though my Spanish lessons are still pending!
